What do I wear?

THE SITUATION… I recently accompanied a client to a group interview last week and I could not help but notice everyone’s outfits. I noticed one guy had on jeans, which I highly advise people to not wear to interviews. If you want to make a good first impression you have to make an effort on your appearance. I hear people say all the time, “but other people wear jeans”. That may be exactly why they are still looking for a job! Maybe if they wore dress pants or kakis instead of jeans the hiring manager may of took them more seriously. Employers look at your clothing, shoes, hair, make up, nails, and notice if you have made an effort to look your best for an interview. Employers want to hire someone that is going to put in an effort at work and if you put in some effort for the job interview then it’s a good sign that you care and want the job.

THE SOLUTION… When going on an interview prepare a few days before if possible. Try on several outfits until you find something that is clean, conservative, and appropriate.

For guys, I suggest wearing dress pants or kakis with a button up collared shirt that is tucked in. If you do not have a button up shirt then a solid color polo style shirt will work. No tie is necessary unless you just want to wear one. Wear a belt if you have one and non-athletic shoes. Guys you have to lose the facial hair for interviews and trim your nails. Some companies have strict grooming policies and it is just better to be on the safe side. Lastly, please do not wear cologne; it gives off the wrong message.

Ladies, please wear dress pants or khaki pants with a blouse tucked in. If you want to wear a skirt or dress the hem must hit below the knee. The blouse needs to be conservative and have sleeves. If not, then please wear a blazer or sweater over it. Also wear close-toed shoes that you can walk in. If they are new shoes I suggest wearing them around the house some before the interview. Your make up needs to be minimal as well as any jewelry. You do not want to call attention to your noisy bracelets; you want the hiring manager noticing your smile. Make sure your hair is not in your face and is neatly groomed.

THE NO NO RULES…. I have a few rules about what not to wear

#1 NO JEANS! No dark jeans, no black jeans, and definitely no ripped jeans.

#2 NO TENNIS SHOES! This means vans and any other athletic shoe.

#3 NO TSHIRTS! If you have to borrow a nice shirt from someone then do that but please no t-shirts.

I promise that you will stand out in a good way if you follow my suggestions. Making a good first impression is key in finding a job!
